It is getting harder and harder to see a solo artist in today’s Korean music industry. In the midst of the so-called, “Storming of the Idol Groups”, Korean solo artists are expressing their hardships and challenges to survive in the current market. In spite of all these difficulties, SE7EN has quietly but earnestly prepared and launched his new album, ‘SE7EN NEW MINI ALBUM’. For 10 years since he made his debut, in continuous effort to experiment with new things, his musical style varied across many genres such as an authentic R&B, Elctronica, Ballad, Crunk & B and etc. However, it is simply insufficient to describe this new album as another new experiment. The new album, to sum it up in one word, is ‘authenticity’. Moving away from an aggressive, electronic attempt on his last album, a total of 6 new songs, including the title of this album, “When I Can’t Sing’, are expressed in a much more relaxed and mature voice. This new style is something that SE7EN has always had but that stayed hidden and perhaps, it is the true color of his music.

YG & JYP’S FIRST COLLABORATION

As Park Jin Young began playing a tune on a piano under a strong, pin spotlight, everyone expected a new JYP release but from the dark corner appeared one men which turned everyone’s expectations into perfect surprises. The title of this new mini album, ‘When I Can’t Sing’ is a surprise collaboration between SE7EN and Park Jin Young which attracted enormous public’s attention once a teaser was released. It was not a mere product between two artists but a first, collaborative outcome between two artists that represent KPOP’s 2 major entertainment labels YG and JYP. This collaboration is a huge impact in current music industry not only because a sentimental R&B song written by JYP and a soulful voice of SE7EN creates a synergistic effect but also it is a much anticipated collaboration between two major entertainment labels that has always been regarded in a rivalry relationship.

Rediscovery of Se7en

In an entertainment industry, transformation is the very element that hold’s artist’s life but 10 years should be long enough to create a fixed public image. SE7EN would have maintained his stereotypical image if it hadn’t been for this new album. ‘SE7EN NEW MINI ALBUM’ symbolizes a transformation of an artist who began his career as one of many idols, to a mature, male solo artist with his own color. A youthful and innocent imagery from a song ‘Come Back to Me’ is now in the past and now, SE7EN has become a mature artist who is capable of fully expressing his feelings through experienced performances. SE7EN does not want his music to be reflective of current music trend with common electronic beats and club tunes. It is his wish to reach the public with an honest heart and a controlled voice.

The public did respond to his wishes. The title, ‘When I Can’t Sing’ dominated in real-time music charts such as Melon, Bugs, Doshirak, Naver, Daum and etc by rising to 1st place right after the release on 1st of February. Also, it ranked 1st on US itunes R&B chart, 2nd on Canada itunes R&B chart and again 1st on Japan itunes R&B chart. Additionally, SE7EN has topped the mainstream stage and music shows after almost 5 years. It seems that SE7EN has finally found just the right music in the industry where songs from idol groups and auditioning shows are in a heated competition.

CLOSER TO THE FANS

As time goes by, you realize that fans have been always there for you. SE7EN planned his new album promotion to thank the fans who have patiently waited for him for over 1 and a half year. Through a promotion event called ‘MOVIE DATE EVENT’, he designed a special get-together with his fans to watch a movie as if you’re on a date. During this event, he tried to go back to the mindset of a young, new artist and communicated with each and every fans. It is still his passion to meet the fans face-to-face even in small numbers and to communicate with them as they are the most precious supporters to him.

MUSIC: SE7EN NEW MINI ALBUM

This new album is generally a beautiful arrangement of a harmony between a refined sound and stable vocal sound. The title, ‘When I Can’t Sing’ and works that have been released priorly in Japan such as ‘Somebody Else’, ‘Angel’, ‘That Guy’, ‘Understand’, ‘Make Good Love’ and etc are all the proofs of SE7EN’s effort in the past 1 and a half year.

• When I Can’t Sing

The collaborative product, ‘When I Can’t Sing’ by SE7EN and Park Jin Young was not just an attempt to accomplish a commercial value but more about pure passion about music and making genuine music as wells as performing in a elaborative stage settings. A piano melody in the intro and the bridge part of the outro controls the complete atmosphere of the song and brings forth a feelings of sympathy from the audience. Also, the lyrical part where [Even if I lose everything / If my popularity drops / When I Can’t Sing / If I get a different job / Will you still be able to love me for who I am?] fits perfectly with SE7EN and what he tries to deliver in his message.

• Somebody Else

Written by YG’s heatmaker Teddy and Big Bang’s Taeyang, ‘Somebody Else’ is the title song of a mini album released in Japan on January of 2012. A refined electronic-pop sound runs through lyrics that portray a feeling of having to love someone from a distance. The intro smoothly begins with an amazing guitar leap and the chorus provides a fresh feeling through a powerful and addicting electronic sound that will lodge in your head.

• Angel

‘Angel’ was also included in a Japan mini album and it shows SE7EN unique, sweet and bright image through works of proposing love. 

• That Guy

‘That Guy’ is a love song as well but its unique style stands out because of his very natural tone in delivering the lyrics. You will not fail to recognize his talents as a R&B singer. Also, the vocal transition between his true voice and head voice maximizes the romantic feeling of the moment of proposing your love.

• Understand

This one is a very emotional ballad piece that tells of sorrows and reminiscing feelings experienced after leaving someone you love. SE7EN delivers this track in a husky, captivating voice to fully express his words.

• Make Good Love

SE7EN shows his sexy and masculine side in this song. SE7EN strength in R&B groove is evident all throughout the melody. The chorus part of ‘Let’s make good love’ becomes very catchy and SE7EN does not hesitate to show his vocal skills.
